Ecommerce development
Ecommerce development that accounts for everything behind the buy button.
Building the storefront is the easy half. What decides whether the business works is catalogue structure, payments, serviceability, returns, inventory across channels and analytics that show where buyers actually drop. We scope all of it before writing code.
Platform-neutral. We recommend Shopify, WooCommerce or a custom build based on your catalogue and margins, not on what we prefer to build. India and international.
- Platform chosen on your numbers Catalogue size, margin and who maintains it decide the answer — written down before you commit.
- The operations layer is in scope COD verification, serviceability, returns and reconciliation, not just the pretty pages.
- Tracking tested with a real order We place a live test purchase and verify every event before we call it launched.
Ecommerce development at a glance
- What it is
- Design and build of an online store on the platform that fits the business — catalogue architecture, product pages, cart and checkout, payments, shipping, returns, tax, analytics and launch.
- Who it suits
- Brands launching direct-to-consumer, sellers moving off a marketplace onto their own store, and existing stores where traffic arrives but conversion or fulfilment is leaking money.
- Platforms we build on
- Shopify for speed to market and low maintenance. WooCommerce when content and organic search drive sales or margins are thin. A custom or headless build when the catalogue logic is genuinely unusual.
- Typical timeline
- 3–4 weeks for a straightforward store under 100 products. 6–12 weeks for large catalogues, migrations, B2B pricing, marketplace sync or multi-country selling.
- Performance target
- LCP under 2.5s and CLS under 0.1 on a product page with real images and live scripts, measured on a mid-range Android over 4G rather than on a desktop.
- Payments
- India: UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and EMI through Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or CCAvenue, plus cash on delivery with verification. International: card, wallet and local methods per market.
- Always included
- Catalogue and variant structure, filters and search, product page build, cart and checkout, shipping zones and rates, tax and GST invoicing setup, returns flow, transactional emails, GA4 and Meta Conversions API, and an admin walkthrough recording.
- Pricing model
- Fixed price against a written scope, with the estimated monthly running cost — platform fee, apps or plugins, gateway charges — quoted separately so you see the true number.
- Ownership
- Every account is created in your name: platform, domain, hosting, gateway, analytics and courier. We work as a collaborator you can remove at any time.
- Where we work
- India nationwide, plus stores for clients in the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Australia and Canada. Calls in IST, GMT or EST.
Four situations we get called for.
If one of these is your business, the rest of this page is written for you.
Leaving the marketplace
Amazon or Meesho is taking a cut and owns your customer. You want your own store without losing the volume you already have.
Ads work, the store does not
Cost per click is fine, add-to-cart is fine, and then the checkout leaks. Somewhere between cart and confirmation you are losing most of the spend.
Returns are eating the margin
Cash on delivery orders that never get accepted, undelivered shipments, and refunds you only notice at month end when the numbers do not match.
Outgrown the first store
The catalogue tripled, variants got complicated, and the store built two years ago cannot handle bundles, B2B pricing or a second country.
What an ecommerce development project includes.
Everything below is written into the scope before work begins. None of it becomes an extra invoice later.
Catalogue architecture
Categories, variants, options and attributes designed once, properly. Get this wrong and every filter, feed and report you build afterwards inherits the mess.
Search and filtering
Filters built on real product attributes rather than free-text tags, with synonym handling and sensible empty states so a search never dead-ends.
A product page built to convert
Gallery, variant selection that does not confuse, delivery estimate by pincode, size or spec guidance, reviews, returns policy in plain words, and a sticky add-to-cart on mobile.
Cart and checkout
The fewest fields that legally work, address autofill, visible shipping cost before the final step, saved carts, and abandoned-cart recovery wired to email and WhatsApp.
Payments, COD and RTO controls
Gateways configured for your market with UPI, cards, netbanking, wallets and EMI. Cash on delivery gated by pincode and order value, with OTP or WhatsApp confirmation before dispatch.
Shipping and serviceability
Zones, weight and dimension rules, pincode or postcode checks on the product page, courier aggregator integration, and tracking that flows back to the customer automatically.
Returns, refunds and reconciliation
A returns flow the customer can start themselves, refund rules that match your policy, and reporting that ties settlements from the gateway and courier back to orders.
Tax and compliant invoicing
GST setup with correct HSN codes and state logic for Indian stores, VAT or sales tax configuration for overseas ones, and invoices that your accountant will accept.
Analytics and attribution
GA4 ecommerce events, Meta Conversions API, Google Ads conversion tracking and the platform's own reports — all verified with a real test order before launch.
Choosing the platform.
This is the decision that costs the most to reverse, so we make it on your numbers before anything is designed. Here is how the three options actually compare.
Based on the stores we build and migrate most often, not on platform marketing.
| Factor | Shopify | WooCommerce | Custom or headless |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | D2C brands that want to sell, not administer software. | Content-led businesses where organic search drives the sales. | Unusual catalogue logic, configurators or heavy B2B rules. |
| Time to launch | Fastest. Payments, shipping and tax are configuration. | Moderate. More decisions before the first order. | Slowest. Everything is built rather than switched on. |
| Cost structure | Monthly plan, app subscriptions, plus a fee if you use an outside gateway. | No licence fee. You pay for hosting, plugins and a developer. | Highest to build, lowest per transaction at real volume. |
| Custom logic | Bounded. Most needs are met; the deepest changes need the Plus plan. | Open, at the cost of you owning the consequences. | Unlimited. If you can define it, it can be built. |
| Ongoing effort from you | Low. Updates happen without you. | Higher. Core and plugin updates need testing. | Highest. You need a developer on retainer, permanently. |
| When it stops fitting | Very deep checkout changes, or margins too thin for the fees. | Large catalogues and traffic spikes without serious hosting. | When the business cannot fund ongoing engineering. |
Most stores under a few thousand products are better served by Shopify or WooCommerce than by a custom build. We recommend custom only when we can point at the specific requirement that the other two cannot meet — never because it is the bigger project for us.
The part most builds skip: what happens after "Order placed".
A store is not finished when the payment succeeds. These nine steps are where margin is won or quietly lost, and every one of them gets configured and tested during the build.
- Payment capture — confirming the transaction actually settled, and handling the cases where it half-succeeded.
- Order verification — for cash on delivery, an OTP or WhatsApp confirmation, plus automatic flags on new customers and high-value or mismatched addresses.
- Prepaid nudge — offering a small discount to switch a COD order to prepaid, which is the cheapest way to cut return-to-origin losses.
- Inventory decrement — stock reduced at the right moment and synced back to any marketplace channels you also sell on.
- Fulfilment routing — the order reaching the right warehouse or the right courier for that pincode and weight.
- Tracking — a tracking link the customer receives automatically, and a branded tracking page instead of a courier's website.
- Failed delivery handling — non-delivery reports reaching a human quickly enough to reattempt before the parcel turns around.
- Returns and refunds — a flow the customer can start themselves, with refund rules that match your stated policy.
- Reconciliation — gateway settlements and courier charges tied back to orders, so month-end numbers match without a spreadsheet.
In the Indian market this layer is usually worth more than the storefront design. A store converting well but losing a large share of its cash-on-delivery orders to return-to-origin is a store losing money on every campaign it runs.
Where to go next.
If you already know the platform, or you need the pieces around the store, start here.
Shopify store
Hosted, fast to launch, low maintenance. The default answer for most direct-to-consumer brands.
Shopify developmentWooCommerce on WordPress
Best when content and organic search are the engine, or when margins cannot absorb a platform fee.
WordPress developmentB2B ordering
Dealer logins, customer-specific pricing, minimum order quantities, quotes and CRM-connected enquiry flows.
B2B website developmentSelling on marketplaces too
Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho and Etsy listings written and built to rank inside each marketplace, kept in sync with your store.
Product listingProduct photography
White background sets and lifestyle frames. On a product page, images move conversion more than any other single element.
Product shootsStarting from zero
No brand, no photography, no store. Everything from domain and identity through to the first campaign, run as one project.
Complete business setupHow an ecommerce build runs.
Five stages, each approved before the next begins, so there is no surprise invoice and no work you did not ask for.
-
01
3–5 days
Numbers, catalogue and platform
Product count, variant complexity, average order value, margin, markets and who will run the store day to day. From that we recommend a platform in writing, with the reasoning, then scope every page and integration at a fixed price.
-
02
4–6 days
Structure and wireframes
Category hierarchy, attributes and filter logic decided before design. Grey-box layouts for home, category, product, cart and checkout — the five screens that decide revenue.
-
03
6–10 days
Design
Desktop and mobile designs, with the product page treated as the most important screen in the store. Two rounds of revisions included, tracked in one shared document.
-
04
2–6 weeks
Build, integrate and test
Store built, catalogue imported, payments and shipping connected, returns and tax configured, marketplace sync wired if needed. Then a real test order placed end to end, including a refund, before anyone signs off.
-
05
2–3 days, then ongoing
Launch and 30 days support
Go live with redirects mapped if you are migrating, tracking verified, and a recorded walkthrough of your admin. Fixes and small changes covered for a month, and we watch the funnel with you through the first campaign.
What decides the price.
We do not publish ecommerce packages, because a 30-product store and a 3,000-SKU migration with marketplace sync are not the same job. Six things move the number.
- Catalogue size and variant complexity — 30 simple products versus thousands of SKUs with options, bundles and per-market pricing.
- Whether this is a new store or a migration, since migration adds data mapping, redirect work and rank protection.
- How many integrations are needed — gateway, courier, ERP, accounting, CRM, marketplace channels.
- Custom functionality the platform does not do out of the box, such as configurators, bundle builders or tiered B2B pricing.
- How many countries and currencies you sell into, and whether duties, local domains and translation are required.
- Whether you supply product photography and copy, or we shoot and write it as part of the project.
Alongside the build price we send an estimated monthly running cost — platform fee, apps or plugins, hosting and gateway charges — so you know what the store costs to keep open before you commit to building it.
Straight answers to what people ask first.
Which platform is best for an ecommerce website in India?
For most direct-to-consumer brands, Shopify is the fastest route to a working store and needs the least maintenance, with Indian gateways such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree and CCAvenue covering UPI, cards, netbanking and wallets. WooCommerce is the better choice when organic search and content drive your sales, or when margins are too thin to absorb a platform fee plus a transaction charge. A custom build is only worth it when there is a specific requirement the other two genuinely cannot meet. The deciding inputs are catalogue size, gross margin, and whether anyone on your side will maintain software.
How long does ecommerce website development take?
Three to four weeks for a straightforward store under about 100 products on an established platform. Six to twelve weeks for large catalogues, migrations from another platform, B2B pricing rules, marketplace synchronisation or multi-country selling. Product photography and product descriptions, when they are not ready, extend the timeline more often than the development itself does.
How do you reduce cash on delivery RTO losses?
Return-to-origin losses are cut in layers rather than by one fix. Restrict cash on delivery by pincode and by order value. Add an OTP or WhatsApp confirmation step before dispatch. Offer a small discount to convert a COD order to prepaid at checkout. Automatically flag first-time customers, high-value orders and incomplete addresses for manual review. Finally, make sure non-delivery reports reach a human fast enough to reattempt delivery before the parcel is sent back.
What should an ecommerce product page include?
Images that show scale and detail, a variant selector that cannot confuse, price with any tax position stated, a delivery estimate for the customer's own pincode, stock status, size or specification guidance, reviews, the returns policy in plain words, and a sticky add-to-cart on mobile. Most abandoned product pages are missing one of three things: delivery certainty, sizing confidence, or a clear returns promise.
Can one store sell in India and abroad?
Yes. Both Shopify and WooCommerce support multiple currencies, market-specific pricing and translated content. The parts that need planning outside the platform are the payment gateway available in each market, international shipping rates and whether duties are paid by you or the customer, and the tax and export requirements of shipping from India. We map those during scoping rather than discovering them after launch.
Frequently asked questions.
Which platform will you recommend for me?
We do not know until we see your numbers, and we would not trust an agency that answered before asking. Catalogue size, variant complexity, gross margin, how you get traffic, which markets you sell into and who maintains the store afterwards all change the answer. You get the recommendation in writing with the reasoning, so you can disagree with it or take it to someone else for a second opinion.
Can you migrate my existing store to another platform?
Yes. A migration covers products, variants, images, categories, customers, historical orders and reviews. The part that protects the business is the SEO work: URL structures differ between platforms, so every old product and category URL is mapped to a 301 redirect, ranking page titles and content are carried over, and Search Console is monitored for four weeks after the switch to catch anything that slips.
Can the store stay in sync with Amazon, Flipkart or Meesho?
Yes, through a channel integration so stock is decremented across every channel when an order comes in. What matters more than the connection itself is the catalogue structure underneath it — if your SKUs and attributes are inconsistent, no sync tool will save you. We fix the structure first, then connect the channels.
Do you handle product photography and descriptions?
We can. Product photography and copywriting are handled in-house and can be included in the scope, or you can supply your own and we will build around it. On a product page these two things move conversion more than the design does, so we would rather agree a plan for them during scoping than launch a store full of placeholder images.
Will the store be fast with all the tracking and apps running?
That is the only measurement that counts. Speed is checked after apps, plugins and pixels are live, not on an empty theme. The usual culprits are unused app scripts still loading, images not sized for the device, heavy homepage sliders and several tracking tags firing on load. Target is LCP under 2.5 seconds on a product page on a mid-range Android over 4G.
Who owns the store and the accounts?
You do. Platform, domain, hosting, payment gateway, analytics and courier accounts are all created in your name with your email and your card. We work as a collaborator or staff account you can remove at any moment. Nothing is registered to us and nothing is held back at the end.
What happens after launch?
The first 30 days include fixes and small changes at no cost, and we watch the funnel with you through your first campaign because that is when the real problems show up. After that you can take a monthly plan covering conversion work, new landing pages, seasonal campaigns and platform maintenance, or run it in-house with the documentation we hand over.
Do you work with clients outside India?
Yes. We build and maintain stores for clients in the United States, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates, Australia and Canada. Calls are booked inside your working hours, scopes and updates are written down so time-zone gaps do not stall the project, and we invoice in USD, GBP or AED.
How do payments to you work?
Projects are split into milestones tied to the scope — an advance to begin, a payment at design approval, and the balance at launch. Larger builds add a milestone at integration sign-off. Indian clients pay by UPI or bank transfer with a GST invoice; overseas clients pay by international transfer or card in USD, GBP or AED.
Tell us what you sell.
Product type, roughly how many SKUs, your average order value and the countries you ship to is enough to start. You get back a platform recommendation with the reasoning, a realistic timeline, a fixed build price and an estimated monthly running cost — usually within one working day.
